The Warm Springs Katahdins flock is located on a 101 acre farm in west – central Georgia. We maintain our flock on grass as the environment will allow us. This spring we are utilizing a wheat-oats-ryegrass-clover mixture.
Our Katahdin breeding flock consists of 80 ‘A’ coat mature ewes. Almost all of these ewes are at least QR at codon location 171. In 2009, we will retain twenty-five ‘A’ coat, twin ewe lambs. These ewe lambs are balanced and above the 75th percentile for all EPD Traits. The 09 ewe lambs will be exposed this fall to a RR balanced ram greater than the 95th percentile for Katahdin EPD traits.
Since we began breeding Katahdins in 1999, we have procured excellent breeding rams. We rigidly cull our flock each year and share our best genetics with our customers.
We are actively engaged in enhancing the EPDs in our flock. We know there is no visible measure that can be used to predict superior meat yield in sheep. EPDs are an important tool for us. We strive to combine high EPDs with excellent phenotype. We breed medium-sized Katahdins that produce fast growing lambs to 120 days and beyond. EPD, FAMACHA and productivity data is available on our lambs. Our sheep are fairly priced. We make our sheep available to those who need them and not just those who can afford them.
To date (late March) we have booked sheep into 8 states. We have several nice ram lambs and many ewe lambs available at the balanced, 75th percentile level for sale. Please see our main web-site for delivery possibilities, http://www.warmspringskatahdins.com or call.
